Whether you are starting a business, or have a business, small or large, the success of your business is always affected by the quality of your employees.

Here are four important issues to address when hiring employees:

1) How do you find qualified employees?

Depending on the size of our company, you probably start by asking relatives or friends. You might put a sign up in your window and try to interest passersby. You might get lucky. You take an ad out in the local paper that covers a large area hoping someone close might see it and apply. Of course, there is no way to know if anybody qualified is even looking. How’s this worked for you so far? How cost effective was it? How long did it take for you to find the right person?

2) How do you process the myriad of applicants, so as not to waste your time or theirs?

You may have the standard job application form from the stationary store or one modified to fit your company. The applicant comes in and gets the form and probably has a lot of questions that you or your employees don’t have time to answer. They fill it out and drop it off and then call you every few days to check on it. You have to file the application, or carry it with you until you have the opportunity to look at it seriously, assuming it’s legible and, of course, it’s always at you fingertips! What happens if you’re not the only one who needs to see the application, or you just want to talk about it with someone else? Do you fax it? Do you mail it?

3) How can you make sure the applicants you want are the real deal?

Are you going to call to make sure the information on the application is factual? What happens if you assume it is and it’s not? What can that cost you in the long run? After you have made the decision to hire a person, how do you handle all those you’ve rejected? Don’t you love having to tell someone they didn’t get the job? You have the time to explain it to them, right? Do you know your legal responsibilities regarding those applicants you have rejected?

4) How can you do all this economically?

Only you can determine how much time and money all this costs your company every time you need a new employee and you repeat the same old process. There is truth to the old saying:

"If you do what you've always done, you're going to get what you've always got!"
